Anne Heche, an actress whose career included roles in films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and the 1998 remake of Psycho, died on August 12 at the age of 53 after a car accident.

Anne Heche, whose career spanned more than three decades and included appearances in more than 40 films and television shows, died on August 12. She was 53 years old.

"Today we lost a bright light, the kindest and most joyful soul, a loving mother and loyal friend," a rep for the star told E! News in a statement on behalf of Heche's family and friends.

"Anne will be deeply missed, but lives on through her beautiful sons, iconic work and passionate advocacy.

Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact."

A family representative told E! News that while Heche is legally dead under California law, her heart is still beating and she has not been taken off life support to give the OneLegacy Foundation enough time to find suitable recipients.

News of Heche's death comes a week after she was involved in a car accident on August 5. The Donnie Brasco star was behind the wheel of his Mini Cooper when it crashed into a house in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, causing it "to burst into flames and come to rest 30 feet inside the two-story home."

Heche was treated at the scene and rushed to hospital in critical condition. On August 8, her rep told E! News that the actress fell into a coma and "did not regain consciousness shortly after the accident."
